Upcoming Film “the Freemason” – A Utah Collaboration Shedding Light On Secret Society

Mirmontazeri was named the “Filmmaker to Watch” by Digital Filmmaker Magazine UK after his film THE BEAUTIFUL WIND garnered the prestigious Audience Choice Award at New York’s International Film Festival. With over fourteen narrative directing titles, including his feature BLUE DOOR and the upcoming Sci-Fi/Thriller MARS.  THE FREEMASON is his first collaboration with Joseph James Films LLC and both are thrilled to highlight the benefits of filmmaking in Utah.

Executive Producer Joseph James describes the film as “a murder mystery that crosses SHERLOCK HOLMES with THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGOON TATTOO. “ He hopes to ease some of the public’s insatiable appetite for the esoteric realms of Freemasonry, by giving them an inside peek of some of the rituals.  The movie follows investigative reporter Cyrus, as he seeks justice in the brutal murder of an elderly Freemason and is forced to go ever deeper into the strange ritualistic world of the Mason’s.  It is the first film ever to highlight the actual initiation practices, including a ritual experience that will surely thrill Mason’s and non-Mason’s alike!  

Thanks to the success of the Sundance Festival and the Governor’s Office support of the Utah Film Commission’s current tax incentive program, Utah is quickly becoming a major Mecca for filmmakers.  James explains that the scenery, accommodations, and filmmaking friendliness of the state will keep him making movies here for a long time.

An award winning filmmaker at the exceptionally early age of 20, Iranian-born film director Sohrab Mirmontazeri was named the “Filmmaker to Watch” by Digital Filmmaker Magazine UK after his film “The Beautiful Wind” garnered the prestigious Audience Choice Award in 2005, at the New York International Film Festival. Since then, Mirmontazeri has truly immersed himself in independent filmmaking, with over fourteen narrative directing titles, including his feature Blue Door, and the upcoming Sci-Fi/Thriller “Mars.” “The Freemason” is his first collaboration with Joseph James Films LLC and both are thrilled to highlight the benefits of filmmaking in Utah.

Mirmotazeri is the nephew of acclaimed filmmaker and Palm D'or Winner Abbas Kiarostami, whom many credit as the catalyst inspiring Sohrab’s early filmmaking pursuits. As chief executive at MirMont Pictures, Sohrab has tirelessly produced narrative and documentary film projects for CBS, Sundance Channel, HBO, MTV, NYU Abu Dhabi, Emirates University, among countless others.

Mirmotazeri’s films have reached audiences worldwide and won him numerous international awards.  He is a recipient of the Utah Film Critic Association's Critic's Choice Award and CEO of the Utah Film Company.

Mini-biography

Joseph James is a producer, actor and director whose filmmaking career ascents began in Hollywood, where he was on numerous sets filming for reality TV, documentaries, pilots, features and short films.  In 2009 he moved to Utah and founded Joseph James Films LLC.  He is an Associate Producer on the Lion’s Gate feature HIGHWAY and was recognized by the Accolade International Film Competition for his directorial debut MASONIC MAP.  Joseph is a Master Mason and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason.  He is also a Shriner, a member of the York Rite and a life-long member of the Grotto.

James’ last project TEMPLAR NATION starred Richard Dutcher and Erik Estrada and James served an invaluable role facilitating the film from concept to completion. His involvement in THE FREEMASON allows the audience to share in his intricate knowledge of the Freemasonry Craft; illuminating viewers of THE FREEMASON movie, as he shares his insight into the subtleties of Freemasonry’s symbols. He is excited to have Sohrab Mirmontazeri join the project and hopes that the film can shatter misconceptions surrounding the Craft of Freemasonry, while exposing its roots.
