Follow on Google News | What's Brewing Mississippi? Homebrewing Legalized. On March 19, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed a bill effectively legalizing home brewing throughout the state. Mississippi is now the 49th state to permit home brewing.
By: Box of Brew In 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed into law a bill allowing home beers, which was at the time not permitted without paying the excise taxes as a holdover from the prohibition of alcoholic beverages (repealed in 1933). This change also exempted home brewers from posting a "penal bond" (currently $1000.00), which economically prevented brewers of small quantities from pursuing their hobby. The 21st Amendment predominantly leaves regulation of alcohol to the states. Therefore, even though home brewing is federally legal, it is still up to individual states to legalize home brewing in state codes. So let's raise a pint and welcome Mississippi to the club! There's an estimated 2,200 home brewers in Mississippi who can enjoy brewing without restrictions from the State of Mississippi. Alabama is now the lone State with laws prohibiting home brewing. It's also estimated that more than 1 million Americans brew beer or make wine at home at least once a year. Box of Brew will help those home brewers in Mississippi learn this 7,000-year-old tradition of brewing craft beer.
