IIHS announces short course on "Media and the City"

EAST OF KAILASH, India - April 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Bangalore, April 1, 2013: Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), a national education institution, has announced a short course on ‘Media and the city’ (http://www.iihs.co.in/programmes/upp/media-and-the-city/media-and-the-city-april-2013/). The course will be held at the IIHS City Campus, Bangalore from April 17th – 21st,. The course aims to sensitise and train learners in understanding, capturing and presenting the multiple aspects of a city in a digital video format.

Course sessions will help the participants understand the different perceptions of the city with respect to its political, cultural, economic and social realms. The course is a mix of theory and practice that includes hands-on technical skill training on making short films in an urban setting from start to finish.The course will focus on some key concepts like how has the “city” been represented in cinema,technical details about the camera, shooting a film, editing, digitizing the footage and script writing. At the end of the course, the films made over the five days will be screened and feedback will be provided.

The faculty for the programme is Subasri Krishnan, alumni of Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia who has been an independent film-maker for the past 8 years. Her work has ranged from a number of commissioned non-fiction films on rights based issues to documentary films. Her first documentary film “Brave New Medium” on internet censorship in South-East Asia, has been screened at film festivals, both nationally and internationally. In 2008, Subasri was awarded the prestigious George Washington International Documentary Filmmaker Fellowship by the Educational & Cultural affairs Bureau of the US State Department. Subasri is also a recipient of the Charles Wallace short-term research and professional grant for 2012.

The other faculty member, Sandhya Kumar is an independent filmmaker and editor. She has been making documentaries and experimental shorts since 2007. All her films are rooted in the non-fiction, and inspired by the desire to make visible the poetry of everyday life. Sandhya holds an MFA in Film from San Francisco Art Institute, and an MA in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia University, New Delhi.
