Candidates for the award must have arrived in sales market in at least two continents from January 1, 2012 until May 30, 2013 and selected vehicles are driven, evaluated, and voted upon by a 66 motoring journalist jury panel that spans 23 countries.

Vehicles are integrated into the daily life of jury panel professionals who will then rate each vehicle not only based on a high standard of overall excellence, but also for practicality for daily life experience. This is a second win for the Volkswagen Golf vehicle as it was the 2009 World Car Award winner as well, and this is also the second consecutive year that Volkswagen has won the World Car of the Year title for one of their models.
