What is Cinco de Mayo? It is the day that commemorates the Mexican army was victorious over the French in 1862. It was the Battle of Pueblo during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). Although Cinco de Mayo is not a big deal in Mexico it has become a big celebration in Mexican communities in the United States. The history of Cinco de Mayo is interesting. Benito Juarez became President of Mexico in 1861 when the country was all but bankrupt. The result was that he was forced to default on loans from European governments. France, Britain and Spain then sent ships to Veracruz to demand payment. Mexico was able to negotiate with Britain and Spain so they withdrew their ships and went home. France on the other hand decided it was a good time to stake a claim on part of Mexico, under the rule of Napoleon lll. Late in 1861 France stormed Vera Cruz with a well-armed fleet and drove President Juarez and his government into retreat. Led by General Charles Latrille de Lorenz France sent 6,000 troops to Pueblo de Los Angeles. President Juarez in the meantime assembled about 2,000 men in sort of a rag-tag army and sent them to Pueblo to fortify the city. Although poorly trained and equipped this rag-tag army was prepared to defend the city. On May 5, General Lorenz brought his well provisioned and well trained army before the city and attacked from the North. The battle went from daybreak to early evening until the French finally gave up and retreated. They had lost nearly 500 men while the Mexicans had lost fewer than 100. Although this isn’t considered a major win for the Mexicans it was very symbolic. Today Cinco de Mayo is not a national holiday in Mexico or the United States, but is seen more as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. It is celebrated in both countries with parades and other festive events. El Indio has chosen to celebrate it by offering a 10% discount on all food orders leading up to May 5. All you have to do is to cut out the coupon and present it at the time you place your order and enjoy what is known as the best Mexican food in San Diego by many customers. End
