A Cup a day may keep the Doctor away!

OKEMOS, Mich. - April 15, 2013 - PRLog -- A recent study at the University of Athens suggests that one or two cups of coffee per day may reduce the risk of aortic stiffness in older adults with hypertension.
Dr. Marcy Street, a board certified dermatologist, and the nation’s first female African American MOHS surgeon in the country sees a correlation to the study in terms of healthy skin. ‘When the blood vessels function better, the result is better elasticity of the skin. Reducing the stiffness of the aorta can have a positive impact on how the skin reacts and is able to more effectively deal with the rigors of aging.’
The study found the following results for older persons who drank 1-2 cups of coffee per day:
•   Lower prevalence of diabetes (22% versus 34%, P=0.02)
•   Lower prevalence of high cholesterol (41% versus 55%, P=0.001)
•   Lower body mass index (28 versus 29 kg/m2, P=0.04)
•   Higher creatinine clearance levels (70.2 versus 65 mL/min, P=0.01)
•   Lower prevalence of cardiovascular disease (19% versus 26%, P=0.04)
•   Higher values of aortic distensibility (P less than 0.05)
Most of the coffee drinkers in the study consumed traditional Greek blends, which have higher levels of phenol compounds thought to be protective for the heart than coffee typically consumed in the U.S.
‘Heart health is directly related to the health of the skin’ explains Dr. Street, ‘since the skin is the largest and most outward organ of the body.’
