Approaches to treat Scoliosis

Scoliosis surgery from the back (Posterior Surgical Approach):

The Procedure is done by making a long incision on the back of the spine. After incision, muscles are stripped off the spine to allow the surgeon access to the bony elements in the spine. The spine is then instrumented and the rods are used to reduce the amount of the curvature. Bone is then added producing a reaction in which the bones in the spine begin fusing together and the bones continue to fuse for about 3 to 6 months which may go up to 12 months

Scoliosis surgery from the front (Anterior Surgical Approach)

This approach entails making an open incision and removal of a rib. Diaphragm is then removed from chest wall and spine and exposure is obtained for thoracic and lumbar spinal vertebrae. The discs are also removed to loosen up the spine. After this bone is added to disc space which begin to fuse for about 3 to 6 months which continues up to 12 months.
