The Quran in verse 4:135 teaches us to defend justice, “…be persistent in justice...Whether one is rich or poor…do not follow your own desires if they take you from justice.” MPV strongly condemns the conditions that have left people who have been cleared to leave continually held at the facility, and the circumstances around the current hunger strike should be investigated to ensure no human rights are being violated. We understand the decision to close Guantanamo rests with Congress and so in the interim we propose prisoners cleared to leave be allowed visitation rights from family members. MPV also believes any remaining prisoners should be charged and tried so that justice can be properly served. Our civil court system is capable of prosecuting criminals and it is simply immoral to hold prisoners without due process. Muslims for Progressive Values recognizes the worth of every human being. Seeking to enact justice through word and deed, MPV believes that even when people commit crimes that those people should be treated with fairness in order to help prevent further extremist action in the future.
