HOUSTON - May 15, 2013 - PRLog -- The National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair is the nation’s premier information-sharing and networking empowerment event focused on encouraging the success of aspiring Black lawyers.  This comprehensive conference is designed to help Black pre-law students become more excellent, competitive and strategic law school applicants and law students.  Through workshop sessions and panel discussions, law school administrators, law students, lawyers, law professors and judges share critical information about what it really takes to get into law school, pay for law school and manage student loan debt, make the most of the entire law school experience, and compete for a job or create one’s own career opportunities.  They also directly address the unique challenges faced by African Americans in law school and the legal profession.

Just as importantly, another major component of the event is to provide real life positive role models of extremely accomplished African American lawyers who are willing to share their personal stories of how they have beaten the odds to achieve success and who have demonstrated a true desire to increase the pipeline of minority lawyers, and make a true impact in their communities.  In keeping with this goal, the conference is excited to announce that Attorney Vernon G. Baker, senior vice president and general counsel of Meritor, Inc., will serve as a featured keynote speaker at this year’s event.

Meritor, Inc. is a leading global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking and aftermarket solutions for the commercial vehicle and industrial market.  In his current position, Attorney Baker has overall legal responsibility for all of Meritor’s global operations and its subsidiaries. In addition, Baker directs all legal activities in the corporation, including corporate governance, acquisitions and divestitures, litigation, business standards compliance, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property. He also has functional oversight responsibility for the environmental and health and safety areas.

Prior to the July 2000 merger of Arvin Inc. and Meritor Automotive, Baker held the positions of senior vice president, general counsel and secretary for Meritor Automotive. Before joining Meritor in 1999, he spent 17 years at Hoechst Celanese Corp., where he was vice president and general counsel of Corporate Research and Technology. Prior to that, he served in the capacity of  associate general counsel for Hoechst’s Advanced Material Group.

Baker began his professional legal career in 1978 as an associate with the law firm of Schnader, Harrison, Segal and Lewis. Two years later, he joined the Corporate Law department of Scott Paper Co.

In addition to his legal work, Baker also serves as an active mentor who fervently believes in investing in others.  He helps to groom and sponsor both men and women for higher-level management in the legal field.
