Brighton is Boston’s westernmost neighborhood. Formerly known as Little Cambridge, Brighton is bordered by Newton to the east, Watertown to the northeast, Cambridge to the northwest, Allston to the east, and Brookline to the south. Though only 2.78 square miles in size, the neighborhood manages to pack about 43,000 people within its limits.

Up until 1807, Brighton was a part of Cambridge. That year, they won legislative approval to annex themselves from Cambridge – later becoming part of Boston in 1874. Brighton at one point included neighboring Allston; however over time they have grown to have separate identities, leading to the moniker of Allston-Brighton to distinguish the two.

Today, Brighton is a popular location for everyone who wants to live in Boston without paying the downtown price. Whether you want to live in Oak Square on the Watertown side of town, or closer to the Allston side, there is plenty of public transportation to get you where you need to go. The Boston College Green Line (B) has 9 stops in Brighton at the following locations: Warren Street, Summit Avenue, Washington Street, Mount Hood Road, Sutherland Street, Chiswick Road, Chestnut Hill Avenue, South Street, and Greycliff Road. The 57 bus runs from Watertown Yard through Brighton to Kenmore Square. The 64 runs through Oak Square and leads directly to Cambridge. The 65 runs through Brighton Center to Brookline. This is just a small sample of the busses that run through Brighton giving easy access to various parts of the Metro Boston area.

Furthermore, Brighton offers easy access to many of the major highways and roadways. Chestnut Hill Avenue leads directly to Route 9 which goes west through Newton and Wellesley connecting to interstate 95. The Mass Pike can be accessed through North Beacon Street in Allston or over by Newton Corner off of Tremont Street. Soldiers Field Road offers easy access to Storrow Drive and Route 2.

The neighborhood is home to Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital and part of Boston College.

If you are looking for an apartment in this area, it is important to work with a real estate agency that has established rapport with neighborhood landlords. Furthermore, it is ideal to work with an agency that has multiple listings – giving you a wide variety of choices.          Due to the high demand in the area, it is important to act quickly – you don’t want to lose out on your favorite place. Losing out on a place over night is not unheard of in this bustling and fast-paced market.
