BALTIMORE - June 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Sarah Vaughan got her start as a child singing in her church choir. In 1942, she was thrust into the spotlight after a winning performance at Amateur Night at the famed Apollo Theatre, and by the mid-1940s she was appearing on television. Soon given the moniker, "Sassy," Vaughan showed off her impressive three octave range, and quickly became regarded as one of the greatest singers of all time. She was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame in 1990, the same year she died.

Miss Vaughan went by another nickname  besides Sassy. She was often called "The Divine One", and her music certainly embellishes that title.  Possessor of one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century, Sarah Vaughan ranked with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday in the very top echelon of female jazz singers. She often gave the impression that with her wide range, perfectly controlled vibrato, and wide expressive abilities, she could do anything she wanted with her voice. When asked about her image as a great jazz singer, she said: "I don't know why I am called a jazz singer. I can sing jazz and blues, but that is not all I do.  There's a category for me. I like to be referred to as a good singer of good songs in good taste."  When asked about her personal favorites, she said: "I dig Doris Day."

Sarah and Doris are both featured on the SINGING LEGENDS pages on songsandmemories.com, along with 28 other music icons, including: Patti Page, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Vic Damone, Rosemary Clooney and Pat Boone. This is an ongoing feature on the website, that is generally updated on a regular basis...the pictures shown on the first page indicate where the bios are eventually heading. If readers see any important legends missing, let the website administrators know.

How are these legends determined? They have to have made an important, long lasting  mark on the world of music, specifically vocal music.  Newer singers currently popular (like Josh Groban, Michael Buble and Adele) may make it some day, but they still have to establish that longevity.  Singers like Bing Crosby and Peggy Lee are not born every day, and the fact that their music is still played attests to the fact that they are the stuff of legends. Miss Vaughan certainly belongs there!
