New York is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the entire world, with people living and traveling here from all corners of the globe.

Although these people identify as Americans no matter where their ancestors are from, part of their American identity is to acknowledge and celebrate their cultural heritage.  This is why Americans celebrate a whole host of cross cultural celebrations.   Duet cake bakery in Brooklyn wants to help these celebrations by providing a custom cake relevant to the specific culture.
Cinco de Mayo, which is Spanish for the fifth of May, is celebrated on, of course, May fifth of each year.  Often times it is confused with Mexico’s Independence Day, one of Mexico’s biggest national holidays.  This day is the Mexican equivalent of the Fourth of July in America and is celebrated on September 16.

Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated in the United States and in parts of Mexico, specifically the state of Puebla.  In Puebla the day is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla or The Day of the Battle of Puebla.  This name sheds some light on why this day is a holiday.

To understand the cultural importance of the day, one has to look at the history.  After a series of wars in Mexico that lasted from 1846 to 1860, the country was bankrupt.  The president of Mexico, Benito Juarez declared a two year suspension of all foreign debt payments, prompting Spain, Britain, and France to send forces to Mexico.  Although an agreement was reached with Spain and Britain, the French ruler, Napoleon III decided to invade Mexico.

The invasion began in 1861 with the French storming Veracruz, causing the Mexican government to retreat. It continued all year and worked its way towards Puebla.  Even though the Mexicans were outnumbered and out armed, but on May 5, 1862 the Mexicans defeated the French army.

Although this battle did not win the war, it gave the people of Mexico a much needed morale boost.  Time magazine reported that , "The Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath."

The day is still celebrated with this history and the sense of culturally pride that came with it.  Duet bakery will be supplying custom cakes in Brooklyn for anyone wishing to celebrate this historic day.  It is a day for Americans, not just Mexicans, to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of America’s southern neighbor.
