By: Veritey Chris decided to step up to the plate and make a difference by educating professional ballplayers as well as their fans about smarter environmental practices. He co-founded Players for the Planet in 2008, an organization dedicated to helping professional athletes and the fans make a positive impact on our planet through reducing, reusing and recycling in and around stadiums. When Chris signed with the Orioles this spring, a local Maryland entrepreneur took notice. Adrienne Peres co-founded Veritey to help families make safer, healthier and more eco-friendly choices about the products they are using. “At Veritey, we are very aligned with Players for the Planet’s mission. Veritey offers a simple, easy-to-use system of approval seals for four categories: Sustainable & Ecological, Non-Toxic & Safe, Cruelty-Free & No Harm, and Socially Responsible. We make it super easy for consumers to change the habit of throwaway plastic,” says Peres. “As professional athletes, Chris and his teammates have a tremendous platform to reach and educate millions of fans. We can make a difference right here in our hometown of Baltimore by providing the Orioles team with eco-friendly bottles.” Chris believes that “it is time to do something positive, not for myself, not for a select group of people, but rather for the global community.” Players for the Planet and Veritey are helping the team change over to a more environmentally sound solution. BPA-free, reusable water bottles, which were donated by New Wave Enviro Products, are the first step in a larger plan to activate players and fans around the sustainability challenges facing our nation. Chris and Players for the Planet organize e-waste drives around the country that help people safely dispose of electronic waste, including old television sets and cell phones. Thus, the organization has dedicated its resources and the talents of the professional athletes who support its mission to educate all involved in youth, amateur and professional sports on how best to adopt environmental practices that will preserve the playing fields and stadiums where we all enjoy playing and watching sports. The mission of Players for the Planet includes supporting one-on-one and group training and education with players, coaches, parents, team managers and owners and front office personnel.
