Two months before the school year ended, the family's daughter and her mother moved to the Philadelphia school district out of Montgomery County. This is when their family's school residency was put into question and which ultimately lead to the arrest of the parents. The family didn't receive a written document concerning the school's residency issue neither did they receive a bill that would allow them to officially pay for their child's tuition at Pine Elementary School. The school pushed for criminal charges when the parents tried to pay for tuition anyway in a bid to make an example of them in front of other parents. The Garcias were also denied a hearing with the Superintendent before the school board. By August 2012, four months later, the Garcia’s were handcuffed, charged with felonies, and jailed. When asked about the actions of the school, Mr. Garcia argues that the charges are based on misunderstandings by the authorities since the case requires an interpretation of school residency laws. Mr Garcia also adds that parents should not be made criminals where matters as mere as school residencies are concerned. The radio interview is scheduled to air on June 19th at 7:30 PM EST and is one of a series of similar radio interviews that are to follow.
