CEN Agrees on New and Revised EU Toy Chemical Safety Standards

In 2009, the European Union (EU) adopted the new Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. The safety assessments, including the Chemical Safety Assessment, and non-chemical requirements were enforced in July 2011.

GENEVA - June 19, 2013 - PRLog -- To accommodate the chemical requirements under the TSD, it is widely anticipated that the following chemical safety standards will be made available prior to the enforcement date of 20 July 2013:

- 2013 versions EN 71 Parts 3, 4 and 5
- Completely new EN 71 parts 12 and 13

The formal voting process for EN 71 Parts 3, 5 and 12 closed on 28 April 2013.  National Members were in favor of these new standards and the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN, European Committee for Standardization) have accepted these standards.  The CEN is preparing these standards for formal publication so that national standardization organizations can make these available to the general public on a commercial basis. It is also anticipated that these standards will be harmonized under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC (TSD) by the EU Commission by publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. Once harmonized, compliance to the standards will demonstrate conformity to the TSD. The revision of EN 71-4:2013 was published in February 2013.

Summary and highlights of the standards are summarized in 2 tables (http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/0...) within the latest SGS SafeGuards bulletin.
