Walworth County is unique in South Dakota. There are few places in the United States that can boast of the heritage of the land and people like this county. As early as 1823, hunters, trappers and later Gen. William Ashley came up the Missouri River with the intent to establish a post. By 1869, some of the Sioux tribes signed a treaty with the US government, giving up a defined land district that included what became Walworth County. Arcadia Publishing’s Postcard History Series: Walworth County allows readers to travel through the history of the area by glimpsing vintage postcards and images of years gone by. By providing a better understanding of the past, both visitors and locals alike will understand Walworth’s unique identity. Highlights of Walworth County: • Rare images, many never before published, that show the early days of Walworth County. • Provides an overview on the Native Americans and early settlers that called Walworth County home. • Photographs of the building of the Wagon Bridge, the first railroad and automobile bridge that crossed the Missouri River. Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
