LOS ANGELES - June 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Author and screenwriter Isaac Ho will be reading excerpts and signing copies of his fourth novel THE CHINESE DELIVERY MAN 討血債. The event takes place at the Five Dollar or Less Bookstore on Saturday June 29 at 12:00 noon in Simi Valley, California.

“This novel is different because it’s my first novel inspired by true events,” says Ho. The story centers around the senseless killing of a Chinese delivery man. While grappling to keep their restaurant afloat, the Lau family must survive New York's criminal court system to find justice or revenge, whichever comes first.

"'Ripped from the headlines' stories tend to focus on the investigation and the prosecution of the crime," says author Isaac Ho. "Once the sensational headlines are gone, what happens to the victim's family?"

Ho reveals that it was necessary to exercise some artistic license and consolidate the brutal killings in New York of several Chinese delivery men into the story of one fictional family. "Otherwise, it becomes the story about a detective's search for a serial killer. We've seen enough of those. I wanted to keep the focus on the victim's family and how they are pushed to seek revenge."

Being true to the immigrant experience was also very important to the way Ho tells this story. "Using broken English reinforces the stereotype that immigrants are uneducated and ignorant. I am the child of immigrants. At home my parents don't speak broken English to each other, they speak Chinese and speak it quite well." As a result, many of the family's conversations are written in Chinese with translations.

"So often we see the immigrant story told through the lens of the mainstream culture. I wanted to reverse that lens and show what a murder looks like from the other side."

"We're excited to welcome Isaac Ho as part of our continuing series of author events supporting local writers," says Will Reilly store manager of The Five Dollar or Less Bookstore.

Copies of THE CHINESE DELIVERY MAN will be available for purchase at the event at a special event rate. The novel is also available on Amazon.com.
