Vintage Postcards Illustrate Bisbee’s History in New Book

Local author shares the history using collection of vintage postcards and images

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - July 9, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Postcard History Series is Bisbee from local author Annie Graeme Larkin. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and postcards from Bisbee’s past.

Visually, the Bisbee of today remains a community frozen in time, with Main Street retaining its character from 1910. The discovery of copper deposits in the Mule Mountains brought forth a wealth that enabled a substantial community. Profitable mining ventures and a need for labor drew thousands of miners from around the world to work in Bisbee. These individuals added a distinct flavor to the area.

Like countless other Western mining camps, Bisbee evolved from a rough frontier community surviving disastrous fires and floods into a town with a substantial population and solid foundation. Bisbee’s seemingly inexhaustible mineral wealth resulted in the community becoming a center of economic and political power in an emerging territory on its way to statehood. It was Arizona’s greatest copper camp.

Highlights of Bisbee include:
•   Vintage postcards offer a glimpse of the now gone communities of Lowell, Jiggerville and Johnson Addition, which disappeared with the development of the Lavender Pit Mine.
•   A chapter devoted to the captivating images of the devastating fires and floods that ravaged Bisbee’s past.
•   A look inside the mines of Bisbee as well as the miners who worked there. The book also covers the mining camp’s most controversial labor dispute, the Bisbee Deportation.
•   Showcases Bisbee’s most prominent building including the Copper Queen Hotel, Cochise County Courthouse, Copper Queen Library and the Phelps Dodge Mercantile building.
