Follow on Google News | PS Racing-coached drivers give good showing at Ordos International Circuit despite technical issuesBy: PS Racing Last weekend, PS Racing traveled to Ordos International Circuit for the Audi R8 LMS Cup weekend, which also featured PCCA, Scirocco R Cup, Formula Masters and CTCC. In the Audi R8 LMS events, under the guidance of PSR’s Pekka Saarinen, drivers Sun Zheng, Ren Wei 'Ricky' and Sun Jing Zu 'JZ' gave a strong showing at the highly-technical Ordos circuit. With Sun Zheng qualifying less than a second off pole position at 7th of 19 drivers, in Race One Sun Zheng had a strong start and was moving up the field when he was sidelined by a mechanical issue. Ricky moved up the field to P3 in the Amateur Class, before the new driver spun off the track to DNF, though JZ managed to finish without difficulty while still learning the highly technical circuit. In Race Two, bad luck struck again as Sun Zheng DNF'd with another technical issue, despite his being a consistent front-runner this season, and Ricky had moved up to P2 in the Amateur Class but once again spun on the Ordos track, which is highly technical and notoriously slippery off-line with the desert dust of Western China. However, fellow PS-coached driver JZ finished on his first-ever podium, 3rd in the Amateur Class - congratulations to JZ on the first podium of his new race career! In the Scirocco R-Cup China series, PSR’s Pete Olson was coaching Jerry Wang of Hong Kong, who is also brand new to racing this year, with Ordos being his second race weekend in the Scirocco series. With only two official practices on Friday before the two qualifying sessions for race 1 and race 2, Wang took over a second off of his laptime per session from practice through qualifying. While in the first qualifying, Wang was 19 of 21, in Q2 he stepped up the game after in-depth data analysis to move up four positions to P15 of 21. In Race 1, starting in 19th Wang managed to finish up 15th of 21 drivers, missing 14th by just a tenth of a second. In race two, Wang experienced a gearbox issue and had to settle for 17th. PSR’s Pete Olson said "Jerry showed great improvement over the weekend and its simply a matter of him gaining more experience and continuing to learn racing techniques. I have no doubt he would have finished at least several positions up in Race Two, if not for his gearbox issue.” The next Audi R8 LMS series races will be August 2-4 at the brand new Inje, Korea circuit with the American Le Mans Series, while the following weekend Inje will host the next two rounds of the Scirocco R-Cup series.
