WAYNE, Pa. - July 10, 2013 - PRLog -- “The mere mention of the word ‘legal’ sends shivers down the spines of many physicians,” say Steven Dayan, MD and Heidi Waldorf, MD, Chief Medical Editors of Modern Aesthetics. “But minding legal matters is necessary to safeguard our practices and livelihoods.”

That’s why the current edition of Modern Aesthetics, from Bryn Mawr Communications III, LLC, covers a gamut of legal issues pressing dermatologists, plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and oculoplastic surgeons. For example, Neal R. Reisman, MD, JD, FACS, addresses the importance of informed consent to guide patient education. “I view informed consent as a non-delegable duty. Some physicians feel that their time is better spent performing procedures and that nurses or staff members can handle other matters,” Dr. Reisman writes.

In his article “The Best Defense is a Good Offense,” Adam B. Krafczek, Jr., JD, also touches on the importance of being proactive. “Find and consult a competent attorney with whom you are comfortable concerning the matters discussed in this article, and ensure that he or she has experience in the areas of medical malpractice and corporate law... Act now, because if you wait until after you are sued or are threatened with a lawsuit, it may be too late,” he advises.

To help physicians be prepared for new regulations, Michael J. Summerhill, JD and Lauren S. Berheide, JD offer a “Five-Step Protocol to Prepare for the Physician Payment Sunshine Act,” while Michael J. Sacopulos, JD provides an overview of new HIPAA regulations. Finally, Cheryl Burgess, MD gives clear advice for minimizing the risk of employee theft in an aesthetics practice.

In line with Modern Aesthetics mission to support physicians in all areas of practice, the current issue, available online at ModernAesthetics.com, also covers developments in aesthetic treatments, including recent FDA action on Allergan’s Juvéderm Voluma XC, RF skin tightening devices, such as with the Xilis Elite from BTL, body contouring technologies, NeoStrata’s SkinActive Line Lift, and Palomar’s SkinTel Melanin Reader device.
