SGS Webinar on EU Chemical Requirements under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC

In June SGS informed you that the EU toy chemical standards EN 71-3:2013 Migration of certain elements and EN 71-5 Chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets have been published.

July 12, 2013 - PRLog -- On 29 June 2013 the standards EN 71-3, EN 71-5 and EN 71-12 have been harmonized by publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) (1).

Harmonized Toy Safety Standards

Details of the new and revised standards can be found in SGS recent SafeGuards publications:

- EN 71-3:2013, Migration of certain elements (2)
- EN 71-5:2013, Chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets (3)
- EN 71-12:2013, n-Nitrosamines and n-nitrosatable substances

On 29 June 2013, the EU Commission harmonized the standards EN 71-3, EN 71-5 and EN 71-12 by publishing Commission Communication 2013/C 187/09 in the OJEU. This means that compliance to these standards gives presumption of conformity with the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. The process of harmonization of toy safety standards consists of two publication steps:

1 - Publication by the standards organization CEN. CEN drafts and agrees on standards that have been developed in cooperation between authorities, industry, consumer representatives and laboratories.
2 - Publication by the EU commission as a harmonized standard in the OJEU. By harmonizing a standard the EU accepts the standard to show legal compliance with the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.

Highlights of the harmonized standards are summarized in a Table 1 within the latest SafeGuards bulletin (http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/0...).
