Summer is officially here, and for many parts of the country, so are the scorching hot temperatures. Don’t let the heat beat you. Be proactive about staying cool and healthy by following these tips, and as always, make sure your most vulnerable loved ones stay cool as well: Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more fluids Remind your high-risk loved ones and friends to drink plenty of water Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, including energy drinks, as well as liquids containing a high amount of sugar. When in doubt, drink water instead Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing Avoid direct sunlight and limit outdoor activities, including gardening and yardwork, to early morning or evening hours when temperatures are cooler Never leave children or pets in vehicles Stay in air-conditioned areas as much as possible to cool down and prevent heat-related illnesses Avoid going out on days with high humidity – high humidity can hinder the body’s ability to evaporate effectively The most common heat-related illnesses are heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. Warning signs include extreme body temperature, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness and confusion. If you develop symptoms of heat stroke, use your Electronic Caregiver system to summon help or get medical assistance right away. End
