Ordering Annual Free Credit Reports

Learn how a consumer can order their annual free credit report from Equifax, TransUnion and Experian.

July 20, 2013 - PRLog -- A Federal Trade Commission study of the U.S. credit reporting industry found that five percent of consumers had errors on one of their three major credit reports that could lead to them paying more for products such as auto loans and insurance.

Overall, the congressionally mandated study on credit report accuracy found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their three credit reports.

This is why the free consumer organization "Bad Credit MD" is advising people on how to order a free annual credit report from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. This information on how to order a free annual credit report that a consumer is entitled to under law can be found at http://www.badcreditmd.com/free-credit-report/.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide credit reporting companies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) to provide consumers with a free copy of their credit report, at their request, once every 12 months. The FCRA promotes the accuracy and privacy of information in the files of the nation’s credit reporting companies. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the FCRA with respect to credit reporting companies.

A credit report includes information on where the consumer live, how the consumer pay their bills, and whether the consumer has been sued or has filed for bankruptcy. Nationwide credit reporting companies sell the information in a consumer's report to creditors, insurers, employers, and other businesses that use it to evaluate the consumer's application for credit, insurance, employment, or renting a home.

Under the FCRA, both the credit reporting company and the information provider (that is, the person, company, or organization that provides information about a consumer to a credit reporting company) are responsible for correcting inaccurate or incomplete information in their report. Consumers can take advantage of all their rights under this law by contacting the credit reporting company and the information provider with any errors they find in their credit reports.
