LOS ANGELES - July 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Excited to welcome Sports Historian and College Hall of Fame Speaker John Greenburg, Celebrity Mentor and founder of FameMentor.com (http://www.FameMentor.com), Valery Satterwhite,  recently interviewed the guest on their popular radio program 50 Shades of Fame and Fortune.  Greenburg is the author of  "Captain Courageous: My True Story" and his latest book "The Grand Old Man: Amos Alonzo Stagg".  The insightful broadcast focused on how pro-athletes with multi-million dollar contracts end up broke. It’s more than just dropping thousands of dollars at a nightclub Porsches as houses for yourself, your parents and your crew. Greenburg offered his perspective on why most pro-athletes are ill prepared to handle their million dollar paychecks.

Greenburg said of the phenomenon,   “The average pro athlete in the U.S. in one season than the average American does in a lifetime. I would say that the biggest problem is selfish behavior. There are various pitfalls to avoid if you don’t want to be broke as a joke. The first thing you have to do is solve your trust issues with people and realize who really knows something and who doesn’t. If you’re an athlete you’re wired differently and you’re used to people giving you instructions. At the same time you’re emotional and very aggressive. And those qualities are great when you’re making financial decisions. You really have to You have to understand and learn how to handle your finances instead of just blindly turning it over to others to manage. ”

With regard to the young age of most of these athletes, Greenberg went on to say “Athletes are today focused – in a we are in a here and now situation. To have them think about saving money and investing for the future you have to shut off the here and now deal and then you’ve got to put your mind into a mode where you’re thinking about the long term. You also have to care about other people in the world and investing in philanthropy rather than another Rolex watch or more bling. That’s what will make you a lot happier in the long run.”
