Downtown Markham Launches Public Call To Artists

MARKHAM, Ontario - July 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Greater Toronto Area - Downtown Markham launched a Call to Artists late last week inviting community artists from around the GTA to apply to be featured in the public realm. The project will feature up to 20 artists on public hoarding at the busy Markham intersection of Birchmount Road and Enterprise Boulevard.

Each artist will have the opportunity to produce their vision of “the perfect city” along 300 feet of the developments’ construction hoarding.  On-site installations are planned from September 9^th to the 21^st followed by a reception where the completed work will be revealed. Following the reveal the public will be given an opportunity to vote online for their favourite artist’s interpretation and the winner will be awarded a $5,000 art commission by The Remington Group for installation in Downtown Markham.  

Construction hoarding, the fencing that surrounds a construction site, has traditionally been used by developers to advertise the sale or leasing opportunities of their development.  “We wanted to use this opportunity to showcase the community and the talent of the community,” said Chris Bratty, President of Land Developments and Investments, The Remington Group. “We would like to provide a platform for the creativity of the community while under construction, and at the same time reinforce our commitment to the long term vision for public art in the City of Markham.”
