Alzheimer’s caregiver who no-can-do Kevorkian measures, writes about the saga

Caregiver to her physician/father with Alzheimer’s for over a decade-- despite a promise for Kevorkian-like intervention-- daughter writes a memoir to illuminate coping skills for the epidemic disease process.

July 30, 2013 - PRLog -- Author, Gina Molitor, published Solid~Wax: A father/daughter Alzheimer’s journey from meltdown to illumination as a practical and emotional handbook for those on the frontline of caregiving the more than 5 million U.S. Alzheimer’s-afflicted. These numbers will triple by 2050, absent a cure, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. The book is available for Kindle eReaders, iPads and iPhones at the author’s website http://www.stresslessorbust.com/solid-wax-memoir.

“Many caregivers are traumatized by how to honor a family member’s Advanced Directives or assisted deliverance requests, Molitor said. “I especially want to help the typical, solo, caregiver who becomes afflicted with a related mental mania from witnessing their loved one’s slow transformation into a mere wax figure of himself and can no longer competently communicate his wishes. My hope is that people see themselves on the pages of the memoir and garner empathy, feelings validation and compassionate guidance for this honorable and isolating role.”

The book advances via colorful and often humorous vignettes about the father’s imparted wisdom that fortifies the daughter’s resolve to care for him years later when havoc ensues. Other anecdotes highlight subtle cues to Alzheimer’s symptoms, as doctor becomes patient, which could aid in proper diagnosis, earlier treatment and financial preparation. Examples of the 7 disease stages are depicted in layman’s terms. How to navigate the healthcare system and residential care hurdles are key topics.

“Alzheimer’s eclipses mere memory loss and confusion, contrary to general awareness, and casts a wide, dark shadow over families. My intent is to carry on the legacy of dad’s career as a physician and educator with the telling of his story and mitigate peoples’ stressful journeys,” Molitor said.

A journalism and psychology graduate, Gina Molitor left the corporate advertising world after taking on the sole caregiving role for both of her ill, divorced parents– her stroke-disabled mother and Alzheimer’s-afflicted father. She now writes and speaks passionately about insights learned during the fourteen years she spent reconciling responsibility with joy in her approach to life. Since stress is the common denominator that undermines all human health, fulfillment and happiness, her mission is to convey coping skills, often blended with levity, to mitigate people’s stress levels.

Her website, http://www.StressLessOrBust.com, with it’s slogan, “Transport Yourself“, provides a respite detour from stress with inspirational and humorous products as well as a destination for solutions, via blog format. Gina has been dubbed the Stress-relief Sage for her poignant and vulnerable brand of storytelling and mindset advice. She has spoken to groups at the University of Houston; The American Advertising Federation; the National Association for Women in Construction; American Women in Communications, and Women in Business seminars for S.C.O.R.E. Volunteer work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association kindles her spirit.
