July 31, 2013 - PRLog -- “For certain we are seeing a growing increase in the prevalence of cataracts as the baby boomer population ages. Along with that we are finding that many more baby boomers with a cataract are still actively employed and need to continue to do so, given the economy. The necessity of a quick, comfortable, convenient recovery from their cataract surgery and lens implant procedure is considerably more urgent as they want and need to get back to their jobs as quickly as possible,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr. “We see this happening across the full range of demographics for patients with cataracts in Athol who have traditional manufacturing jobs as well as patients with cataracts throughout greater Boston in executive positions. It’s just a sign of the  times that we are all working longer and need to preserve eye health and vision to be able to do so.”

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 24 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. Symptoms of cataracts may include a clouding or blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision or shadowing in one eye, fading or yellowing of colors and poor night vision, sometimes with haloes around lights.

“Patients used to ask us if it was okay to delay their cataract surgery and we would tell them that when they notice difficulties or discomfort with blurry or cloudy vision, night driving or with sunlight to let us know and it would be a good time to consider cataract surgery. Today, with the younger cataract patients and working baby boomer population, their tolerance for any interference with their ability to get back and forth to work and be productive at work is really limited. Basically, they want good vision now-pretty consistent with the baby boomer instant gratification mindset,” remarked Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr. “Another interesting observation is that many of these cataract patients have had LASIK with us some 15 years ago and have become accustomed to not wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses-and they really just don’t want to start wearing glasses after their cataract surgery. We find that we are implanting more and more toric lens implants to correct astigmatism as well as multifocal lens implants to correct near vision focusing problems and distance vision without requiring bifocals or reading glasses for more and more patients for these patients.”
