The Chevy Cruze Turbo Diesel Engine is Coming to Cox Chevy

The 2014 Chevy Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel (http://www.coxchevy.com/models/2014-chevrolet-cruze-diesel/), available soon through Cox Chevy in Bradenton, is changing the way the auto world thinks about diesel engines. Using an innovative “variable swirl” design in the engine, Chevy engineers have created a “perfect storm” mixture of fuel and air, allowing for maximum power output and preventing the emission of many noxious compounds.

“Variable swirl helps put the ‘clean’ in Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel. It increases the mixture-motion of air and fuel in low-speed, low-load driving, like when you’re doing the commuter crawl to work every day,” said Mike Siegrist, 2.0L turbo diesel assistant chief engineer. This is what contributes to the higher fuel economy in the model, the lower environmental impact, and the higher amounts of torque released.

To create this perfect storm, Chevy designed the engine so each cylinder would have two separate air intakes with one of the intakes controlled by a valve. An actuator controls the movement of the valve, adjusting the amount of air flow to create the perfect mixture of air and fuel.

The result is an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 46 mpg and a range of 700 miles per tank of fuel, higher than any other non-hybrid or gasoline powered car in the United States.

The Cruze Clean Diesel's emissions also meet the Environmental Protection Agency's stringent Tier 2 Bin 5 emission standards. The diesel engine's variable swirl design allows for more complete combustion, eliminating the formation of many harmful NOX compounds.

Like the standard Cruze, the Clean Turbo Diesel model will be available with some of the market's best features, including the Chevrolet MyLink system with Bluetooth connectivity for handsfree calling, music streaming, and more.
