Follow on Google News | eBookOnFire.com Launches Project to give e-Readers to Needy KidsCompany will maintain a list of free eBooks for them as well.
By: eBookOnFire.com "I had the idea," says Author and Founder Wayne Hicks, "in the middle of the night, and got up and started doing research. At first I was looking at buying used or refurbished devices like readers, tablets or smartphones to use, but then I was contacted by a company taht can supply me new e-Readers for about $20 each." The devices are fairly simple, Wayne says. They have built-in WIFI capability, and are capable of browing the internet and downloading eBooks and music, but not a lot more. They have no camera or microphone, and would be slow for things like video or many online games. "And that's fine. The point is to give kids a way to read some of the work of the new and undiscovered Authors out there, the ones who are self-publsihed and not available in print." Wayne goes on, "Of course, many of the Classics are available free as eBooks, and many educational works, so there's more to this than just recreational reading. I can easily foresee the day when teachers assign eBooks as required reading, just as they sometimes assigned television specials when I was a kid. I can remember kids being laughed at because they didn't have a TV. I don't want to see kids laughed at for not being able to rad an assigned eBook. With this device, that won't happen." The project is starting small, and Wayne is seeking contributors to help. Contributions can be made directly on the company's website, on the bottom of any page, and all contributors will be featured on the project's dedicated page: http://ebookonfire.com/ Wayne is hoping to team up with others, as well. He's already contacted RIF.org, and is looking for other organizations to help drive the project. End
