In New York, simple possession of another’s driver’s license can result in a “false impersonation” charge (a Class B misdemeanor) or a “criminal impersonation” charge (a Class A Misdemeanor). Making a fake ID is considered Forgery (a Class D Felony). Possession of an altered driver’s license is considered “Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument” (a Class A misdemeanor or D felony, depending on what is done with the ID). If you are charged with a misdemeanor, you can expect to pay a fine between $500 and $800 or if charged with a felony, a fine between $1,500 to $3,000.
