IIHS announces a course on Protecting and Managing Living Urban Heritage

EAST OF KAILASH, India - Aug. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Bangalore, August 20, 2013: Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) in association with UNESCO and Indian Heritage Cities Network (IHCN) has announced its short course on Protecting and Managing Living Urban Heritage which focuses on understanding how to address conservation issues in urban living heritage spaces. The course will be held in Bangalore from August 27-August 31, 2013 at the IIHS City Campus.

 Development in Indian cities is often understood as a choice between current demands and preserving historical and cultural patterns. Today, urban spaces often exist between the global and the local, characterized by a contrast between striving for modernity and embracing history. However urban heritage in India is not merely a remnant from the past, but is continuously evolving and updating itself, where the past is very much a part of the present. In this context, the formal understanding of 'heritage' is rather limited wherein archaeological sites and historical monuments are considered worthy of preservation but not much else.

 This course aims to enable an approach among urban practitioners that seeks to integrate “living heritage” in urban conservation and development, within the frameworks of existing regulations and guidelines. It aims to build perspectives on how to identify, understand and relate to various aspects of urban heritage by re-examining the values associated with them and identifying the opportunities provided by them for sustainable development. The objective is to understand how to address conservation issues in urban living heritage spaces, including protected monuments in certain cases, which are part of a range of social, economic and cultural inter-linkages.

 

Application to this course is open to all interested individuals. No prior knowledge or training in the field of heritage or preservation is required. The IIHS Short-Course is also open to working professionals with work experience in related fields - Government officials of Town Planning Departments and Urban Local Bodies, Public and private sector practitioners involved in the creation of DPRs for JnNURM and other schemes. The course will also be relevant for practitioners and students of architecture, planning, conservation engineering and associated disciplines.
