Dominion MMA earns 5 medals @ 10th Annual American Sambo Association North American Freestyle Sambo

SAN ANTONIO - Aug. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Russian Sport Sambo students from Dominion MMA recently competed in the 10th Annual ASA North American Freestyle Sambo Championships held in Austin Texas on August 18th, 2013. 

Thirteen Sambo schools from around the nation competed in this event to demonstrate their technical ability in the Russian Mixed Martial Art known as Sambo. 

Sambo is an acronym of Russian words “SAMozaschita Bez Orujiya” – “Self-Defense Without Weapon.”  SAMBO (http://www.dominionma.com/?page_id=194) was created in the 1930′s. Official recognition of new art was in 1938. At first it was named “free-style wrestling”, then “free wrestling,” and in 1946 was renamed “SAMBO (http://www.dominionma.com/?page_id=194).”  This system is compilation of techniques from a number of martial arts including Japanese and Chinese martial arts; national martial arts of USSR area natives (Georgians, Armenians, Mongols, Russians etc.); French wrestling and other arts. 

According to head Sambo coach, Reynaldo Rodriguez, a Gokor Chivikyan Hayastan Grappler, we attended this event to see how well our Sambo program would match up against more established Sambo programs from around country. I had complete confidence in my Sambo students.

Dominion MMA placed 5 athletes in 5 divisions.

Coach Rodriguez said he was extremely pleased with the results. When you can take Sambo students that have never competed in a Sambo tournament and earn 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals against more well established Sambo programs then we know that we have a great program.  

I never doubted our Sambo program to begin with but when you have Sambo coaches from other schools travelling back and forth to Russian to learn new Sambo techniques or to improve their Sambo I did not know what to expect but in the end I believe people will now know that Dominion MMA has a strong Sambo presence in San Antonio, Texas  and South Texas.
