ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Aug. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Hamlet is located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, and was founded in the late 1800’s when an Englishman named John Shortridge established a woolen and saw mill in an area known as Marks Creek. In 1870, a railroad connecting Wilmington to Charlotte passed through Hamlet, and connected to a line at the Pee Dee River. A railroad was constructed from Raleigh to Augusta, GA., and it was through the influence of Mr. Shortridge that the track was routed through Hamlet.

The town of Hamlet, Incorporated in 1897 boomed as railroad workers established homes, and businesses profited from numerous tired and hungry passengers on trains that passed through Hamlet on the New York to Florida run.

By 1936 Hamlet was intersected by five Seaboard Railroad lines through Hamlet including about thirty passenger trains, and was branded with the nick name, “Hub of the Seaboard”. This hub is now represented by a recently renovated Seaboard Railroad Passenger Station, and is said to be the most photographed station in the eastern United States. As history repeats itself, the Railroad industry continues to play an important role in Hamlet.
