Hip Hop Fashion Has Historical Roots

Aug. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- It is hardly newsworthy to announce that people try to emulate the styles and fashions of those that they look up to. This mimicry can cover a large spectrum of personality types. Not just dedicated to jewelry of celebrities as they have traditionally been described, movie stars, recording artists and such, but also the whole new subculture of those who’s fame is less tangible. We take style clues from real housewives and fake bachelors, conservative pundits and liberal zealots. That makes it easy to explain why kids from the suburbs and farms are wearing the gold rope chains and other fancy bling that is the calling card of hip hop stars from the “hoods” across the country.

On the face, there seems to be little in common with the life of an inner city gang banger in Oakland, CA and a middle class high school kid in Darien, CT, but it less about the content and more about the message. Music by, and for, the youth has always had an element of rebellion to it. That rebellion music was first started by African American musicians such as Chuck Berry and others in the rock and roll craze of the 1950's. No less than The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin have all said that the true father of rock and roll, was not Elvis but Mr. Berry. Middle class kids embraced him, the duck walk and the 4/4 beat music as a sign of rebellion against their parents.  Just as their parents had listened to Jazz or Blues, instead of the big band sound that was preferred by their parents and so and so forth back to the beginning of music.

Today is no different. Rebellion is not just about what kids listen to but how they dress and what they wear. To call it a rebellion is a little much; a phase they are going through perhaps is a little more accurate. In the meantime, while they want to look like they just stepped from the ‘hood (or a Bentley with the success some of these stars have) VanScoy Diamonds has the look they want.
