Avery Schreiber Playhouse Presents ‘CARRIE’ That Tune: Hit Songs From Flop Musicals

LOS ANGELES - Aug. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Los Angeles, CA -- The Avery Schreiber Playhouse proudly presents the world premiere of “‘CARRIE’ THAT TUNE: HIT SONGS FROM FLOP MUSICALS,” a musical revue, in nine performances August 30rd  –September 29th  at 4934 Lankershim Boulevard, Noho CA 91601. “Each of these songs was a bright spot in a Broadway musical that flopped,” says Trace Oakley, writer and director. “These are great songs,” Oakley adds, “Many are classics from the Great American Songbook, but not from hit musicals or from Tin-Pan-Alley songwriters. For every LES MIS, MY FAIR LADY and ANNIE, there's at least one PIPE DREAM, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, or THE BAKER'S WIFE, proving that even Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz can write a flop.”

“For every blockbuster smash like BOOK OF MORMON or PHANTOM, there's an epic flop counterpart, such as SPIDER MAN, and that flop by which all others are measured, CARRIE. However, luckily for posterity--and for us,” Oakley adds, “many of these shows contain extraordinary songs which became hits in their own right. 'CARRIE' THAT TUNE' is a tribute to these songs kept alive by recordings of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald.”  

The revue begins with a re-creation of the notorious publicity stunt pulled by producer David Merrick on the opening eve of his flop SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING. This one-of-a-kind musical breathes new life to some of Broadway's greatest songs, such as "Who Can I Turn To?", "What Did I Have?" and "One Night in Bangkok."

The cast of 'CARRIE' THAT TUNE includes Bill Arnold III, Mirie Ben-Tzur, Alena Bernardi, Keri Green, Joshua Kerr, Rosanne Limeres, Linda Nile, Shelley Scovin, Len Smith, Ety Terry, and Averi Quinn Yorek. Written and directed by Trace Oakley; Choreography by Averi Quinn Yorek.
