The blood drive, which still needs more donors, is open to anyone who makes appointment for the September 12 and 13 blood collections. In July, the American Red Cross issued an emergency news release asking for more blood donations due to an extreme blood shortage. In the news release the Red Cross revealed that nationwide blood donations were down by 10 percent in June1. It is estimated that every donation can save as many as three lives2. “Our blood donors help make a difference for many types of patients, including children with cancer and those who need ongoing treatment for sickle cell disease,” said Diane E. Ward, CEO for the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “Blood transfusions are crucial to both groups of individuals and play an important part in helping to extend and save their lives.” The process to donate is simple and quick. Participants register and schedule an appointment to donate blood. On the day of appointment, donors will receive a mini physical and if qualified, will provide blood for approximately eight to nine minutes. To make an appointment to donate at a Community Choice location, visit RedCrossBlood.org and use sponsor code: communitychoice. Protect your identity and securely destroy old documents In addition to the blood drive, the Credit Union is offering local residents the opportunity to securely destroy their unwanted documents at its branch locations in Warren, Livonia, Farmington Hills and New Hudson on September 13 from 12 through 4 p.m. This service comes at a time when identity theft has increasingly become a problem. According to a 2013 report by Javelin Strategy and Research, 2012 identity fraud incidents increased by more than one million victims with fraudsters stealing more than $21 billion from victims. In 2012, there was a victim of identity theft every three seconds3. Both Credit Union members and non-members can drop off their shred materials for only $5 per box (up to 30 pounds). The documents will be gathered by Bulldog Records Management and securely destroyed at an offsite location. All proceeds benefit the Community Choice Foundation. For more information, visit GiveBigWeekend.com A Culture of Paying it Forward Credit Union’s have a strong history of supporting community and charitable programs through volunteerism. As not-for-profit organizations, owned by members of local communities, credit unions believe in the philosophy of people helping people. As a shining example of this philosophy, the Credit Union’s Give Big Weekend has proven to be a success. Last year’s Give Big Weekend raised $6,179 for local charitable programs and featured Community Choice team members, family, and friends volunteering 597 hours in one weekend. The Weekend, which is planned by a group of volunteer team members known as the Give Big Committee, provides one weekend for every team member to bond over giving back. “The Give Big Committee meets on a regular basis to help plan for charitable opportunities,” The Credit Union has also committed to helping the long-term future of Michigan through its Community Choice Foundation. Since its creation in 2009, the Foundation has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to 101 Community Choice Scholars who attend accredited colleges or universities in Michigan. “Our scholar program was inspired by our President & CEO, Robert Bava’s vision to find a way to help end Michigan’s brain drain,” said Abbey Bierlein, Foundation Coordinator at Community Choice Credit Union. “Recipients of our scholarships pledge to use their education to give back to Michigan communities after graduation. By encouraging students to stay in Michigan, we’re doing our part to ensure the great future of our state.” 1Source: American Red Cross as of July, 2013.
