Thieves In The Night Care of Jewelry

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sept. 9, 2013 - PRLog -- The night was hot and the air was heavy with sticky remnants of summer humidity. A dark alley and a lone shadowy figure was all that lay between an ambitious reporter and breaking the biggest story of her life. With extreme caution and heightened anticipation, the woman crept closer to her secret informant. She had been given clear and concise instruction not to speak or make eye contact. Her only job was to take the information provided in a packet, and report the undisclosed contents.

Sweat seeped from every pore, rapid heartbeats thundered in her ears, and as fast as the shadow appeared, so too did it vanish back into the night. She was left standing alone clasping what she hoped were the revealed facts from an infamous jewelry and cash heist that took place in 1978. The Lufthansa Heist: the legendary scandal that has since inspired a slew of gangster related books and movies, left a trail of cold, dead bodies in its wake, and still has authorities investigating the disappearance of 6 million in cash and jewels.

After years of witness protection, names changes, and small Midwestern hideouts, a man only describing himself as P.G., finally decided to come forward with information. He contacted a local NYC reporter and claimed he had the inside info on where the loot was stashed. He only wanted to work with her. Why, she’ll probably never know.

As she scoured through the pages, a small diamond tennis bracelet fell into her lap. Was this a prize for her cooperation? A tiny note was attached that read: Van Scoy Diamonds. Burks backyard. Enjoy. A few days later, investigators were digging up the backyard remnants of Jimmy Burks Queens New York home. A local jeweler in NC was also paid a visit by authorities. Then there was a lovely reporter, walking the streets of NYC with a beautiful new piece of fine jewelry.
