By: Health Care Management China Derek Muhs, Vice Chairman & Co Founder of Health Care Management China, presented a Key Note Lecture on "Developing Health Care Facilities in China at an International Standard". The speech focused on the key drivers of the health care market boom in China along with what challenges face international health care providers trying to enter the China health care market. Mr. Muhs quoted a recent report from KPMG, which stated, “Accelerate public hospital reform; improve quality and management of healthcare service as well as encourage healthcare reform overall are amongst the top priorities for the Chinese Ministry of Health.” The audience included international doctors, members of the health ministry in China, government ministers along with Venture Capital and Private Equity Investment groups. Other speakers included Mrs. Julie Munro President of The Medical Travel Quality Alliance, Mrs. Laila Al Jassmi CEO of Dubai Health Policy & Strategy Sector and Dr. Luis Felip Arango Pardo Managing Director of USCD (University of San Diego) Health Care International. A report from McKinsey and Company was referred to by several of the speakers, which stated “With expenditure projected to grow from $357 billion in 2011 to $1 trillion in 2020, China remains one of the world’s most attractive healthcare markets and offers by far the largest growth opportunity of all the large emerging markets.” During a separate panel discussion, the moderator Xiao Fang, President and Founder of China International Health & Medical Tourism Association, (see photo) asked Mr. Muhs to explain what makes the private health care facilities different from the Chinese health care system. He answered, "The number of people in urban areas of China has meant that the average time doctors spend with patients is approximately 3-4 minutes. This makes it very challenging to provide a high standard of personalized care. Private health care centers offer a patient-focused experience that allows doctors to have sufficient time with the patient and improve the overall health care experience and of course, patient care." The conference and exhibition was a tremendous success according to the organizers and the international delegates who attended.
