Increasing Demand for Homes in the UK

POOLE, U.K. - Sept. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- The information was published in the Financial Times and points out that households will rise to a staggering 27m in that time.  This will create colossal demand for new homes which is unlikely to be met, according to the first long-term projections based on data from the last census and published in the FT recently.

Approximately a quarter of a million homes will be needed each year to house the growing population says a report by the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research and the Town and Country Planning Association.

However, the highest demand will be in the south - nearly 70% - with 25% of that figure in London alone, according to the report.

Currently only around 100,000 new homes are being built each year which is the lowest construction rate during peacetime since the beginning of the century.  This is less than half of what is currently required.

Over the course of the next 20 years that would mean a shortfall of 2.4m homes that will be required.

The research is based on data from the 2011 census which highlighted that the population of the UK was significantly higher than previous projections had predicted.
