Academy Hosts ‘Kids Out Loud’ in Local Schools

LYNCHBURG – Local students at Sandusky Elementary and R.S. Payne Elementary are singing loud this month with Kids Out Loud, a songwriting program hosted by the Academy of Fine Arts.

Through in-school workshops led by Paddy Dougherty and Kathy Hussey, students are working together to write original songs and prepare for in-school performances. This week at Sandusky Elementary, 9 classes of students in 3rd-5th grades are writing songs about group chosen topics like “Candy, Candy, Candy,” based on Halloween, and “The Quiet Game,” based on the discovery by kids that the ‘quiet game’ is actually a parenting ploy.

Next week, 10 classes of 3rd-5th graders at R.S. Payne Elementary will participate, also culminating in an in-school performance of original works written by the students. This is the third Kids Out Loud program hosted in schools by the Academy and this year, supported in part by the Genworth Foundation and each school’s PTA.

Kids Out Loud teaches kids to value their voice, their thoughts, ideas and feelings and it empowers them to work together to develop and express those ideas through the collaborative art of songwriting,” said songwriter Paddy Dougherty. “The songs are outstanding...funny, touching, poignant and well worth hearing.”

The Academy of Fine Arts, anchored by the historic Academy of Music Theatre, inspires, engages and educates the diverse population of Central Virginia in the performing and visual arts.
