NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Oct. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- New Rochelle, NY—Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers (http://www.liebertpub.com) and the American Thyroid Association (http://www.thyroid.org) announced that Gerard M. Doherty, MD, the James Utley Professor of Surgery and Chair, Department of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine and Surgeon-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center, has been named Editor of VideoEndocrinology, a groundbreaking new educational resource for endocrine surgeons, otolaryngologists, endocrinologists, radiologists, and other specialists. VideoEndocrinology is included with a subscription to the flagship journal Thyroid (http://www.liebertpub.com/thy).

“I am excited to explore this medium as a way to provide detailed, nuanced, informative content that is not easily presented in a print format. It is a great honor to be selected as Editor of this innovative new videojournal,” says Dr. Doherty.

VideoEndocrinology is a new peer-reviewed, rapid publication platform for high-quality video presentations of cutting-edge open and minimally invasive surgical procedures and diagnostic imaging techniques and technologies covering thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and endocrine pancreas tumors and diseases to improve patient outcomes. The Journal will provide a dynamic new venue for surgeons and physicians to share their techniques and showcase new approaches. The Journal will also present guideline updates, meeting reports, mini-debates, videobriefs, and other timely content.

Dr. Doherty is currently President-Elect of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES). He is on the Board of Directors of the American Thyroid Association and has held multiple leadership positions in national and international professional groups, including the Council-Coordinator of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Dr. Doherty has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and is committed to undergraduate medical education and residency training.

Dr. Doherty’s clinical focus is endocrine oncology and comprises surgical diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, endocrine pancreas and adrenal glands, as well as the surgical management of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes. Prior to coming to Boston Medical Center and Boston University in 2012, he spent a decade as Chief of General Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System. Dr. Doherty was the NW Thompson Professor of Surgery, Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery and Section Head of General Surgery, as well as Director of the Surgery Residency Program.

“We are thrilled that Dr. Doherty has accepted this wonderful opportunity and challenge. His reputation in the field, proven leadership in many areas, and skills in this exciting new medium make him a perfect Editor for VideoEndocrinology,” says Bryan R. Haugen, MD, President of the ATA and Professor of Medicine and Pathology, Head, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes, Mary Rossick Kern and Jerome H. Kern Chair in Endocrine Neoplasms Research, University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Beginning in January 2014, the highly valued abstract and commentary publication—Clinical Thyroidology, led by Editor-in-Chief Jerome M. Hershman, MD—will be part of the Thyroid journal expansion, enhanced by a sophisticated online format that will be easily searchable and discoverable, and accessible in libraries and institutions all over the globe as part of a subscription to Thyroid.

ATA members in good standing and other subscribers to Thyroid will receive VideoEndocrinology and Clinical Thyroidology as part of their membership benefits.
