Follow on Google News | Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows...and author Beverly LeinAuthor finds more terror in real-life evils during the season of scares.
"I find the fact that seemingly ordinary people can possess within them the most horrible impulses that they act upon without remorse—not ghosts, not demons, not some un-killable knife wielding maniac like you see in so many horror movies," says Lein, who delved into the darker territories of the mind for her most recent release. Evil on the Peace River, set in the Peace Region of Alberta, details the bloody rampage of a set of escaped criminals guided only by their intent to wreak as much carnage as possible. The venture into the thriller genre was a departure for Lein, and one that she's pleased to have taken. But as Lein describes, the journey can be a mixed blessing: "I enjoy a good scare as much as the next person, but I occasionally unnerved myself during the writing process. My characters are sociopaths with no conscience and no moral compass at all. To me, that's the definition of soulless. When you start trying to get inside the mind of someone like that, trying to imagine the worst-case scenario of human behaviour, it can quickly turn terrifying. But, honestly, if I wasn't a freaked out by the behaviours I'm describing, I'd actually be quite worried about myself!"
