By: Honeywick Cyclocross is a fast growing sport in the United States, with a long established popularity in Europe. This physically demanding sport requires a combination of skill, strength, and speed. Cyclocross athletes use multiple muscle groups because they not only have to ride a bike, but must also run with a bike up steep stairs, carry a bike, and maneuver through challenging terrain which, depending on the season, can include sand, mud, leaves, water, ice, and even snow. This weekend’s Louisville cyclocross MudFund Derby City Cup http://derbycitycup.yolasite.com/ Pre-registration for this Louisville cyclocross event ends Wednesday, November 6th, at 10 p.m. EST. Pre-registration entry fees are waived for all junior categories. Participants enjoy pre-race riding on Friday, November 8th, from 2 to 4 p.m. Each cyclocross participant in the 2013 MudFund Derby City Cup, which is part of the 2013 Ohio Valley Cyclocross Series, will receive an OVCX timing chip to be secured on the top of their helmet. Full cyclocross race results will be posted to USA Cycling. Working to promote youth participation and the popularity of cyclocross, the Tim Johnson Mud Fund provides scholarships to students in high school and college who want to compete in cyclocross races in the USA and internationally. An exciting new feature to this Louisville cyclocross event includes an expert panel discussion on CX racing, training, and fitness. The expert panel will be held on Saturday, November, 9th, 2013, at the podium from 1:15 to 2 p.m. The expert panel is diverse and includes Louisville orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stacie Grossfeld, Masters Champion Curtis Tolson of Tolson coaching services, Steve Tilford, Master World Cyclocross Champion and cycling pro with more than 30 years of experience, Dr. John Mandrola, a renowned cardiologist, and Dr. Ty Richardson with Baptist Health. The panel will field questions from the crowd covering topics about orthopedic medicine, common sports injuries, cx racing, cyclocross training strategies, and much more. As an organizer of this special cyclocross expert panel, Louisville orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stacie Grossfeld explains: "We are excited about this addition to the cyclocross races. It is a bonus to be able to offer health and wellness as a component to a sporting event. I'd like to say a special thanks to Baptist Health for facilitating this opportunity by supporting the panel of experts. The Louisville Sports Commission also had a key role organizing this event." A graduate from the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine, Dr. Grossfeld completed her medical training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She also completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Center. Dr. Grossfeld has experience providing sports medicine at previous Louisville cyclocross events including the 2013 World Cyclocross Championships.
