Humana COO Expects Obamacare Enrollment Deadline Will Be Extended

ATLANTA - Nov. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- An executive from Humana, one of the largest health insurance providers on the Affordable Care Act's newly established exchange, said on Wednesday that he expects the U.S. government to extend the enrollement deadline beyond March 31, 2014 because of the technical problems that have frustrated millions of US consumers.

"Our assumption is that there will be an extension to the open enrollment period," said John Murray, the Chief Operating Officer at Humana said during the quarterly investor call.  It was reported earlier this week by CBS News that only six individuals across the country enrolled for coverage through the www.healthcare.gov website on the first day of enrollment despite the website getting 4.7 million hits during its first day.

The Obama administration's aim is to have as many as seven million Americans covered through online exchanges established under the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  Young and healthy Americans have been dismayed by the exchange's technical problem and frustrated by the significantly higher premiums under the new law, creating concerns that the exchange may not be able to survive.   A significant shortfall in enrollment among young and healthy Americans who cost less to insure, would undermine the ability of the exchanges to work financially.
