Wimbo is Changing Musicians’ Practice and Performance RoutinesWimbo Music, Inc. aims to change the way you interact with popular songs with today's major update to the Wimbo Music iPhone app.
By: Wimbo Music Wimbo allows musicians to control every instrument and vocal segment in a song. To do this, players simply move the sliders to adjust the levels of each stem or mute them entirely. They can manipulate the songs as needed to create a customized experience based on their individual needs. The concept for Wimbo came to Denis Ouellette, Founder and CEO, after he recognized that musicians do not enjoy playing alone as much as they enjoy playing with other musicians. Furthermore, perfecting a difficult arrangement is particularly challenging when you can’t single out the notes you’re trying to play amidst the other instruments and vocals. The app solves these problems by making it more fun for musicians to play and making it easier for them to improve their skills. Wimbo also works as a substitute for missing band members. Just as musicians can “fill in” for the instrumentalists and vocalists in their favorite songs, the studio-quality backing tracks can “fill in” for band members who are unable to attend a practice or show. Early praise for the app asserts that it is “very promising,” “a great app for musicians,” and “may save the music industry.” Wimbo Music was also one of the winners of the Startup Innovators Challenge at the San Francisco Music Tech Summit XIII earlier this year. Although the tracks are indistinguishable from the originals, they are actually reproductions. Because most songs are recorded in formats incompatible with the new music technology, remakes must be produced in the correct format. To do this, Wimbo obtains the rights to the songs from their publishers, then hires professional studios, musicians, and sound engineers to recreate them in the required multi-track format for the app. Ultimately, Wimbo Music wants to help advance the music industry by giving musicians a tool that changes the way they interact with music and enables them to perform at a greater capacity than was previously possible.
