Michigan Singer/Songwriter Mary McGuire finds success on the Airwaves in India and Dubai

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. - Nov. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA – Detroit Music Award winner and Mackinac Island musician Mary McGuire’s song Better Than Me is featured on the compilation Independent No. 1’s Vol 2 which was released in Goa, India on November 1^st by WOA Records. Digital distribution followed on iTunes and other digital stores on November 15, 2013. Over 10,000 copies have been distributed to major media partners including Vh1, Times, global radio partners and Outdoor print media partners., radio, press and clubs at holiday destinations including Ibiza, Goa, Mumbai, Thailand, Dubai, Toronto, London, New York and Hard Rock Cafés worldwide.  The album will also get in-store cd distribution at stores like Virgin Megastores, Landmark, Rhythm House, Planet M and many more by November 29, 2013. She was also recently featured for the 2nd episode of the WOAFM99 terrestrial and streaming internet Radio Show. The song is Better Than Me, a song about bullying. On the road driving from Boston, MA to Storrs, CT several years ago, Mary heard an episode on Fresh Air with Terri Gross about a high ranking woman who left the military after the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” went into effect. Upon arriving at her gig, a particularly aggressive man started in on her about being a musician and how unlikely a career choice it was for a woman. The inspiration hit and the lyrics were written immediately. The song, titled Better Than Me touches on the subject of bullying:

Assassin’s grip
Pissed off stance
I better get out fast
I would rather lose my uniform than my integrity
I have a right to my own free will
What makes you better than me?

The song covers the theme of bullying, McGuire shares “in all the customer service jobs I have had in my lifetime and make no mistake, performing live is a customer service job as well…it is astounding to me that people feel they can bully a person who is serving them food, a drink, a song - for any reason at all. While we all let it roll off our backs, the ultimate bullying is when someone attacks your integrity, sexuality, religion, appearance, well, your entire core of being. All of this is what fueled me to write the song. I dedicate it to all that serve others and have had to make the decision to stand up for themselves in the face of emotional, verbal and physical abuse.” The song sat for over a decade. From there, the song received airplay on Radio Mackinac, a streaming internet station on Mackinac Island and WMVY’s Local MusicCafe this past summer on Martha’s Vineyard. It was selected on WOAFM99 and the compilation Independent No. 1’s Volume 2 in August.

About Mary McGuire
She was caller 11 on Detroit's hit radio station WDRQ with legendary disc jockey China Jones. At the station on 8 Mile Road in Detroit, the closet doors opened and her 11 year old arms were loaded up with the entire Beatles discography. Back at home, Mary dropped the needle on side one of Revolver on her blue Panasonic record player and at that the moment she was hooked. Growing up in 70's Detroit and learning from the radio jocks of America's first underground radio stations was all it took for Mary to pick up the guitar and learn her first Beatles, Neil Young, Eagles and Led Zeppelin tunes. Once she started, her appetite for acoustic rock guitar was fueled.

As a singer/songwriter, her music merges elements of folk, rock and pop, often with poignant lyrics and complex harmonies. Her compositions have been used in films, television shows, General Motors commericials and on the celebrated slack radio show Church of the Subgenius.
