PRINCE2® and Agile Project Management™ work very well together. It doesn't have to be a choice of one or the other. For organisations who feel the shift to an entirely Agile approach is one they are not ready for then the marriage of the two gives the best of both worlds. Each has a proven record of delivering successful projects. Some of the principles are the same and each enhances the other where they are different. The PRINCE2® principle of tailoring to suit the project's environment means that the roles and responsibilities can easily incorporate the Agile roles and responsibilities. The particular Agile strength of iterative and incremental product development can be used to deliver a product as early as possible to the business that can realise a quick return on investment. The PRINCE2® use of stages mean that products can be re-visited to incorporate enhancements as the project progresses. The popular use of Timeboxing in Agile can be easily be implemented within the PRINCE2® work package delivery. The use of the MoSCoW technique (Must haves, should haves, could haves and won’t have this time) for prioritising requirements in Agile is already introduced into the PRINCE2® environment where cost and time have no tolerance. All of the PRINCE2® principles can be successfully applied in an entirely verbal project, although most organisations require a written audit trail of decisions and controls. If a project is being run in an Agile environment, which values working solutions over comprehensive documentation, this does not entirely negate the need for any documentation. PRINCE2® management products can be tailored to incorporate Agile documentation where appropriate.
