AUSTIN, Texas - Nov. 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Four students from Texas have been selected to be members of the 2014 Primary Math World Contest (PMWC) team fielded by Mathworks at Texas State University.  The team will compete internationally in Hong Kong this coming summer in a contest of mathematical problem solving and creative thinking.  The team members were chosen from 370 students who took the 2013 Mathworks Math Contest (MMC) in late October.  The 2014 PMWC team members are:

Hannah Liu, 8th grade, Katy, Beck Junior High

Claire Zhou, 7th grade, Sugarland, Fort Settlement Middle School

Vincent Huang, 7th grade, Plano, Schimelpfenig Middle School

Jonathan Shoemaker, 7th grade, Austin, Holy Family Catholic School

Through the Mathworks Math Contest, students developed mathematical abilities.  Claire Zhou remarks, "The beauty of math is hard to appreciate until you experience it yourself. Problem solving helps stretch your mind to think creatively and differently which is something that no one can teach."  Austin student Jonathan Shoemaker is excited for the opportunity of international competition: "I've been competing in math competitions since the 3rd grade, but this is a whole new level.  I'm excited to compete against the best, and going to Hong Kong will be awesome!"

These four students will attend the 2014 residential Junior Summer Math Camp program at Texas State University in June to train as a team.  In July, they will then compete in the PMWC in Hong Kong against more than 40 other teams from across the world.  Mathworks has sent a team to the PMWC 11 times, and has achieved the top non-Asian team recognition 8 times.  In 2013, the Mathworks team won the PMWC outright.
