Deron High School Implements New Parent Teacher Organization to Improve Parent-School Relationship

UNION, N.J. - Nov. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- In response to feedback from parents interested in taking a larger part in its operation, Deron High School of New Jersey, Inc. has proudly finished implementation of its parent teacher organization. The parents and caregivers who spurred the organization into being were ready to have a voice at the school and to become more involved in their children's educations. Their wishes have been granted through the newly active PTO.

Two meetings have been held thus far, and director Kenneth Alter revealed that they have already attracted a wonderfully diverse group of parents. Attendees created and voted on a mission statement for the organization and now meet monthly at the school on Saturdays in order best accommodate a majority of schedules. Notably, the group chose not to elect or designate "officers," though the school's principal, Chastity Rivera, director, Eric Alter, and parents Victoria Gary and Sonsari Byrd have all been instrumental in the early stages of the Deron High School PTO.

About 29 parents and staff have purchased membership cards, the proceeds for which go toward future student activities, and are now committed to pursuing a number of goals, including:

* Supporting educational programming and fund drives;

* Promoting health and wellness goals and initiatives;

* Sharing opinions about future programming;

* Maintaining a format for staying informed about upcoming events;

* Fostering collaborative relationships with teachers and administration.

So far, a PTO-sponsored pizza luncheon, parent liaison letter, and meetings with lawyers to address issues for students with disabilities over the age of 18 have already exemplified the group's commitment to its goals.

Alter expressed the overwhelmingly positive response from Deron families, sharing, "The response from families has been positive and encouraging in that each month, more parents and guardians are showing their interest by attending meetings or signing up for membership. We here at Deron have always had an open door policy where we welcome parents to come in and visit or discuss any and all issues concerning their children and their education here with us. The PTO has just provided an opportunity for families and guardians to speak from a collective voice in a monthly forum which allows for reciprocal communication and immediate feedback."
