New Book Celebrates the History of Avila Beach

Local authors team up to pen new book showcasing vintage images

Nov. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Avila Beach from local authors Terry J. San Filippo, Jack San Filippo and Pete Kelley. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by in this California beach community.

For more than 100 years, Avila Beach has represented the best of what California’s Central Coast has to offer. Inhabitants of Avila have, since before its inception as a town, borne witness to the many changing faces and cultures representing the California landscape.

The area’s earliest inhabitants were the Chumash Indians, who populated the Central Coast until the arrival of the Spanish missions. Later, the San Miguelito Rancho land grant was awarded to Don Miguel Avila, for whom the town itself was named. Images of America: Avila Beach brings to light the forgotten facets of Avila’s rich history.  By highlighting vintage images the book hopes to honor the Avila Beach’s legacy and preserve its history for future generations.

Topics discussed in Avila Beach include:

•The Founders
•The Wharves
•The Railway
•In the Bay
•The Oil
•The Fishing
•World War II Comes to Avila

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
